Life Drawing

In the life drawing session we explored the female figure by drawing with a variety of mediums and techniques. We started with charcoal or pencil for a couple initial drawings to get comfortable with drawing the figure, before moving on to using pen, coloured chalks and masking tape to achieve various effects. Using different mediums helped us to experiment with line and shading and also allowed for more abstract interpretations. All the drawings we did were timed, some were long (for about 15 minutes) whereas others were just a few minutes. Doing drawings in a short time really pushed us to loosen up and understand the figure as a whole quickly, rather than fixating on one part. Through out the day, the model moved so we drew her in different positions and angles, allowing us to develop a better understanding of the structure of the body and all the limbs, and the way shadows and highlights catch on parts of the body. We also did a focused study on hands and feet in detail, two parts of the body which I find particularly challenging to draw. This session was a great way to practice and improve in drawing the figure, considering aspects such as shading, details, position and angles.
