Playing with darts: Pattern cutting

Darts are an essential part of making sure a garment fits the shape of the body. We started by copying a template bodice block that had a centre front waist dart and a mid shoulder dart marked on it, before creating a duplicate of this original block to manipulate further. I made several more cuts in order to explore a range of different darts. This was a useful exercise as it helped me understand how creating darts in different sections of the bodice allows us to alter the shape and fit of a garment bodice. Watching additional videos demonstrating darts showed how they can be used to construct a whole fitted garment (such as a blazer), as well as being used in a more experimental way to create complex patterns and structures in a bodice- this, I found a little confusing to start with, however, still a very interesting way to experiment with darts.

The darts shown below are as follows:

  1. Centre Front-Bust Level
  2. Mid-Armhole
  3. Centre Front-Neck
