This week we were using house hold items and collected rubbish to create jewellery and accessories. I really enjoyed this project as it pushed my ideas about fashion, and helped me to think more creatively, and out of my comfort zone.
To experiment with what we could create with our collected items, we photocopied the three dimensional objects directly and used these to create collages onto a muse as well as playing around with photocopies on the mannequins. This was a useful way of generating lots of ideas and also made it easier to play with size and scale, and using multiples.
From this workshop on the first day, we went on to draw up some ideas and then develop them further- I found this was quite easy as there were so many possibilities for each design, although I do feel that I could have been more adventurous in my creations and the objects that I chose to bring in.
We then moved onto creating actual objects with our items before beginning to construct the final piece. I decided to make use of a bag of wooden pegs that I had brought in, and wire which I used together to make a accessory that would be worn around the chest/bust (like a sort of peg corset?), with shoulder pieces as well. As I wanted to incorporate some textile elements into the piece, along with the idea that pegs are used to hang clothes, I attached some yarns and threads that hang off the pegs. Some of my peers suggested that to make the garment more interesting I could have used more than one type of object that I had collected- this I agree with; I did bring in some light bulbs that I was quite interested in using, however, I didn’t have many and was a bit unsure about how I would incorporate them successfully.
