Pattern cutting continued: Setting in sleeves

In this workshop, I used online tutorials to learn how to attach sleeves to a bodice that I had made previously when looking at how darts give shape to a garment. This was quite helpful as sleeves is usually a weak-point for me; I normally struggle with how the sleeve edge and the armhole are not cut so that they fit each-other exactly, you really have to pull and manipulate the fabric. I now realise that I may not have been cutting and attaching the sleeves properly when I have been sewing my own projects so this workshop was really helpful and made the process feel a bit easier.

Whenever I have made sleeves in the past I usually cut them exact to the armhole size, however the tutorials instructed us to keep the sleeve lightly bigger than it needs to be (where it attaches to the armhole) and to gather it very slightly along a small section to help it fit. I found that this was a good way to make sure that a sleeve will always fit into the armhole and I noticed that the slight gathering at the top of the sleeve also meant that it sat better.
