JOHAL, Anand FMP ProposalSection 1: Rationale
Studying the foundation course for fashion and textiles has enabled me to really grow in my creative practice. After coming from a fine art A-level background, this course has given me the chance to understand the fashion and textiles industry better, through learning how to conduct research, develop my ideas and produce successful outcomes in this field. I have greatly expanded on the range of media and methods that I use in my work, resulting in more varied and interesting work, as well as utilising digital software (of which I had little previous experience), using photoshop in particular to produce my own digital prints, rendering them and printing them onto fabric using the heat press. Over the course, I became drawn more to a future in textiles as opposed to fashion as I enjoy exploring techniques such as knit, print and embroidery, therefore I have been tailoring my work to this. I have chosen to base my project on the natural world due to the abundance of unusual textures and surfaces which will provide exciting possibilities for textile based work. Section 2: Project concept
I constantly find myself fascinated by the natural world, noticing the beauty in even the smallest things such as weeds and moss, which most people would overlook in everyday life. In a world of increasing technology, we are becoming out of touch with nature, and I believe that it is important to reconnect with and appreciate nature. We often look at things as a bigger picture and disregard all the little ‘pockets’ of nature that thrive among our built up world, however, through this project I intend to take a much closer look. I hope to present a different view of details in nature, revealing them as whole landscapes themselves in a project aimed to connect with everyone, as each one of us should be appreciating the natural world that we live in. Macro photography will be a great way to record these details, and the many rich textures and surfaces found in nature. Through various media/methods I will experiment with presenting and recreating these textures, surfaces and details from the natural world to produce textile outcomes. Progressing through the project, I may expand my concept to investigate exotic flora as well as everyday nature, as exotic plants can often appear so bizarre up close, almost like alien landscapes. Kew Gardens will provide a huge source of research for this as I will be able to look at and record real plants as well as using their library, where I will be able to learn more about nature and related art. There is also a relevant exhibition for me to start my research, at the Saatchi gallery, involving an immersive experience aided by virtual reality headsets, designed to reconnect us with nature.
Section 3: Evaluation
Before starting this project I will create an action plan and timetable to plan out what I aim to achieve each week, and to ensure that I work efficiently to complete all the components for this unit. During studio time I will engage in group discussions and 1-2-1 tutorials with tutors in order to gather feedback which I can then reflect upon in my blog. Keeping up to date on my blog with a new post each week will also help me keep track of my work and analyse it to notice what is going well, along with addressing any problems and how I plan to/have overcome them. Looking at blog posts and feedback from previous projects would also be useful in helping me identify any strengths that I should utilise in the FMP and any areas that I need to improve.
